Women who are experiencing violence or have experienced violence can come and receive advice, support and information without having to stay. To come for an interview, you must book an appointment on the shelter's website. https://kvennaathvarf.is/boka-vidtal/ or by phone 561-1205.
Interviews are available in Reykjavík and also in Akureyri, at Aðalstræti 14.
The interviews are free.
The interview is entirely at the woman's discretion, usually taking about an hour and usually taking place in the shelter. However, it is also possible to request a telephone interview if a woman lives out of town or is unable to come to the shelter for other reasons. When a woman comes to the shelter for an interview, a counselor sits down in an interview room with the woman and takes a brief history of the situation. The next steps depend entirely on the situation. For example, the woman may request another interview, be referred to another service, or be offered a stay at the Women's Shelter.
Women come for interviews for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they come to get practical information related to leaving the abuser, how to file for divorce, custody issues, housing issues, etc. Victims of intimate partner violence often become desensitized to the situation, have become accustomed to the language and behavior of the perpetrators, and are not always sure whether it is domestic violence. It can be uncomfortable to discuss a difficult domestic situation with loved ones, which is why women sometimes come for an interview with a counselor at the Women's Shelter to discuss their situation.
Family members can also use this service to receive advice and support.
